BCIT CCW Award Winner Announced

This year's BCIT Canadian Construction Women Award Winner was promising student Georgia Fisher, who hopes to get into the 3rd year and 4th year Architectural Science degree program this coming fall.

This award was established as an endowment in 1999 and is given to a deserving student annually.

CCW Hosts Panel Event Discussing Vancouver 2020

This month, CCW hosted a panel event discussing Vancouver 2020: the City’s “Greenest City 2020 Action Plan”. The panel explored the scope of the plan, how it will be implemented, challenges to implementation and how will it change the way we build and design together. This discussion was moderated by Jennifer Fix, an Urban Planner at DIALOG, who asked these questions to a series of experts. The panelists included Erin O'Melinn, Executive Director at HUB – Sustainable Transportation, Deana Grinnell, Director of Land Development at Parklane Homes and Sarah Buckle, Senior Sustainable Advisor at MHPM. These experts also fielded questions from the floor, which turned into a very active conversation. The panelists elucidated on questions such as: How will we achieve affordability and accessibility as well as sustainability? What does densification mean for factories and industries and businesses operating in Vancouver? How is this plan integrated with the surrounding municipalities? How do you promote behavior change? Are we creating a class system, whereby the elite are sustainable? The panelists suggested that the solution lay in a mixture of public policy, open dialogue, scientific evidence, accountability, integrated design process, education and both public and market awareness.

There was strong momentum in the discussions and the audience was very engaged; however, the clock eventually brought the evening to a close. Fortunately, CCW is hosting a second part to this series on April 23, 2013. This session will also be moderated by Jennifer Fix who will be discussing with a second set of experts: Janine de la Salle, System Specialist at Golder – Planner, Food + Agriculture, Margot Long, Principal at PWL Partnership - Landscape Architect, Teresa Coady, Formerly President & founding partner of B+H BuntingCoady – Architect. Join us to take part in shaping the future! Listen to the panelists’ ideas and weigh in with your own perspectives.

Member Profile: Doris Fischer, Secretary, CCW

I am working as a Senior Technologist at DIALOG - a fully integrated multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, interior designers, urban designers and planners with a special culture and spirit.

I am currently doing details for all aspects of building projects, from interior to envelope details, ranging from healthcare to mixed use and institutional projects.

Before I started working in Architecture I worked in different disciplines such as Structural, Electrical and Interior Design. I even worked 6 months on a Dusseldorf transit subway construction site installing rebar, doing formwork and testing concrete.

I am very much interested in the whole construction process from design to feasible solutions on site. I love meeting the people who make it all work.

I joined CCW in May 2010 and attended various events where I enjoyed meeting interesting people from all the different aspects of construction and where I had the opportunity to meet the board members. I volunteered for the board in December 2011. CCW provides great opportunities for networking and giving back. Besides the social aspect, I do love the site visits - seeing construction sites I would never get to otherwise.

Women already count for a high percentage of the construction related workforce on the planning side, but we are still underrepresented in the trades, so I am happy that we can represent ourselves in a great organization and support more and more women in finding their way into our industry.

On Tuesday June 25^th we donned our hardhats, steel toes, and safety vests and had a fantastic educational site tour of the 2-storey, 160 000 sqft Edmonds Pool & Community Centre in Burnaby for our CCW monthly event.

Our tour guides, Jim from Smith Bros & Wilson (general contractor), Mike from Lockerbie & Hole (mechanical contractor) & Ahmet from The AME Consulting Group (mechanical consultant), Alisha from CEI Architecture Planning Interiors (architect) walked us through the site and showed us the unique construction and design challenges for this type of facility. This aquatic centre features a six-lane, 25m pool, a leisure pool, warm swim and therapy lanes, a lazy river with two channels and double waterslides. The community centre also features a 12,000 sqft twin gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, spaces for seniors and youth, fitness studio, etc. At the end of construction, the team will hand over a beautiful, LEED Silver facility!

For dinner that night we had heaps of delicious food courtesy of Vito and his friendly staff at the Balkan House. The menu of Calamari platters, various salads, traditional Balkan meat plates with vegetables finishing off with Tiramisu and Crème Pita left us stuffed with goodness packing left overs for lunch the following day. If you are looking for a meal around this area this place is worth checking out.

We hope every one enjoyed the night as much as we did and that it provided a fun relaxed place to meet, chat and further your network base with other like-minded women in the industry.

Heritage and Sustainability in the City of Vancouver

CCW hosted Diane Switzer, the Executive Director for the Vancouver Heritage Foundation, who gave a fascinating presentation on heritage preservation in the city of Vancouver and how it interacts with sustainability objectives.

Diane discussed unique housing styles in our city and stressed that each style of home is an important part of Vancouver’s history and, therefore, not only the turn-of-the-century homes but also the Vancouver Specials could be considered “Heritage” (the designation itself is up to the building owner). Diane wasn’t opposed to the modern concrete and glass homes currently being built. Quite the contrary, she was very positive about how modern architecture can work with these historic homes to tell Vancouver’s whole story. Diane was also very supportive of infill efforts including infill homes, laneway homes and building up on commercial buildings as these maintain the historic fabric of our city. The presentation was filled with pictures exemplifying Diane’s points, which created a very rich and visual presentation. It was like floating through our city streets with an expert storyteller.

The event was held at the Shebeen Whiskey House in Gastown, which is coincidentally an old brick building from the late 1800’s. Two guests (Kate Gerson from Dialog and Farah Makani from MCW Consultants) also won tickets to the Vancouver Heritage Foundation Annual Heritage House Tour held on Sunday June 3rd!

I have been a member of the Canadian Construction Women since 2006. My first meeting was the Annual General Meeting, where I watched Marg Latham pass the gavel to the incoming CCW President, Shelley Neil. I was so impressed with activities and members of the CCW that I joined the organization that evening and became a volunteer on the board soon after that. I have enjoyed my involvement with the CCW for many reasons but first and foremost, because of the incredible network of women that I have met through our group. I have enjoyed sharing ideas, providing and receiving support, and creating friendships with so many of you. I have also loved the opportunity to tour the landmark construction projects in our city and to see these buildings through the eyes of the people who brought them out of the ground. OK, I have to admit that as a “suit”, it’s just cool to be able to wear a hard hat and steel toe boots! Despite our many accomplishments, I think that there is even more the CCW can do to facilitate dialogue between members, and to provide mentorship to women at the early stages of their career in construction. These are two of the areas that I look forward to working on during my second year as our association President.

Happy New Year! That may seem like a strange greeting considering that it is now March, but since the CCW Annual General Meeting was held on February 21st, we really are just at the start of our programming year. For those of you who were not able to join us at the AGM, you were missed! We enjoyed an evening of tasty food and lively conversation in a private room at the Water Street Café in Gastown. The board members and I outlined our plans for 2012-13 year. First and foremost, we will be maintaining our successful program of tours, educational seminars and networking events. We will also be seeking to expand our active member base, exploring new member benefits, updating some of our communication materials, exploring new trades-only events, and evaluating options to invest our growing sponsorship funds. It is going to be a very exciting year. We look forward to seeing you at our events and to sharing further updates with you throughout the year.

Women in Trades Panel Event Builds Bonds Among Attendees

CCW hosted a panel and networking event for 60 female trades students and industry on January 24, 2012 at BCIT and sponsored by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA).

We partnered with BCIT Trades Discovery, BCIT School of Construction and the Environment. Inspiring stories from four women who have a combined experience of over 30 years, Tamara Pongracz (Plumber), Kathleen Scott (Electrician), Kate Stewart (Carpenter) and Kelly Kienleitner (Electrician) provided the attendees with their inspiring stories. They were very open and honest providing insight about their experiences and, despite all their challenges, reaffirmed their love for their fields! Not only were our panellists superb but our audience was amazing, after 20 minutes the entire room was exchanging stories, advice, recommendations, encouragement & support.

Furthermore, all four panellists and the attendees that are currently working in the field, invited all the students at the event to contact them at any time in the future for further mentoring. This event was inspiring for anyone at the event. It reaffirmed that although a minority in the industry, women are present, they love their jobs and will always support each other.

CCW Summer Social - A Swinging Success!

CCW recently hosted its annual golf event at the UBC Golf Club. The UBC golf pro’s put a great clinic together for golfers of all levels. We were separated into three groups and worked on our putting, pitching and driving. Lessons were learned and errors corrected (hopefully) for good!

The night ended with a delicious feast at the clubhouse that included passed hors d’oeuvres, a gourment buffet and a chef serving shrimp & scallop pesto orzo straight from the wok. Susan Hayes from Dialog was our door prize winner, taking home a beautiful Yellow Tail red wine gift box.

We trust that all the women who joined us for this exciting event will be at the next company or industry golf tournament showing the men that the women can also be great contenders!

CCW Hosts Roundtable Event

CCW's May event, Being Part of a Successful Construction Project, was a roundtable discussion featuring:

Architect (Molly Chan, NSDA)
Mechanical Engineer (Susan Hayes, Dialog)
General Contractor (Shelley Neil, PCL)
Sustainable Consultant (Jennifer Sanguinetti, B.C. Housing)
Owner’s Representative (Rafii Houtan, Beedie Group)

The discussion was centered around a 'mock' project for a multi-use facility in a remote B.C. community. The intent was to highlight the common issues & frustrations that we all face when we are involved in a construction project. It is all too common to get wrapped up in our own goals and we often forget about the reasoning for the decisions made by our counterparts. The conversations generated from this scenario were very interesting and everyone brought great insights from their disciplines. The audience had asked thought-provoking questions and the discussions went on well into dinner!

Another first for CCW was a co-hosted event with ASHRAE BC. The May event was a presentation & workshop on BIM-Revit. Thank you to ASHRAE BC Chapter for their support!

CCW Dragon Boat Team Now Known as “Raise A Little Swell”

At the year-end wind up last Fall, a decision was made to rename and introduce a new identity for the Dragon Boat Team formerly known as the CCW. Now named Raise a Little Swell, this year’s team will be comprised of 24 Lower Mainland women, from all walks of life ranging from bankers, teachers, nurses, lawyers and business people, who are well poised to bring home some shiny new medals as they commence their training season and prepare for upcoming Regattas.

CCW Visits VanDusen Botanical Gardens Visitors Centre

Designed to resemble an orchid, the VanDusen Visitor Centre will become one of Vancouver’s signature green facilities, targeting LEED® Platinum certification and LivingBuilding status. A certified LivingBuilding must be net-zero energy, net-zero water, non-toxic, reduce its embodied carbon footprint with carbon offsets, and recycle 80% - 100% of construction waste generated.

CCW Tours the Iconic Hotel Georgia

CCW members participated in one of the final tours of Hotel Georgia before it opens this summer. An icon of Vancouver's historic high-life, the hotel was originally constructed in 1927; visitors have included the Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Queen Elizabeth II. On the tour participants learned about the extensive restoration process and one of BC’s deepest excavations. This was the second opportunity for our members to exclusively tour the hotel project site.

After the tour, CCW members enjoyed the opportunity to network with their peers over dinner at the Metropolitan Hotel.

The sold out event received rave reviews! We look forward to seeing everyone at our next event.
